news: Clegg's music a cultural melting pot

09:57 AEST Wed Apr 29 2009 By Alyssa Braithwaite http://news.ninemsn.com.au/entertainment/807471/cleggs-music-a-cultural-melting-pot

South African singer Johnny Clegg is a world musician with truly global inspirations.
During the three decades he has been making music, Clegg has borrowed from Zulu street rhythms, Zimbabwean guitar playing, folk rock and hip hop music.
He is known around the world as "the white Zulu" for his ability to blend Western and African influences in his music.
"We mix and find meeting points between different cultural, rhythmic, melodic and linguistic traditions," Clegg told AAP from Johannesburg.
"I've sung in Indian, I've sung in Zulu, the last album I did songs with French, Zulu and English in the same song, I draw broadly on Zulu traditional street music, I draw sometimes on some Zimbabwean guitar style, and obviously rock and pop.
"The wonderful thing about a world musician is they're allowed to meander through all the various traditions really."
Clegg was born in the UK, but grew up in South Africa, where as a teenager and budding guitarist he developed an interest in traditional Zulu music and dance.
He formed South Africa's first racially mixed band, Juluka, with Zulu musician Sipho Mchunu.
Not afraid to get political, Clegg's 1987 song Asimbonanga (We haven't seen him) called for the release of Nelson Mandela.
Since then he has lent his voice to Mandela's 46664 HIV and Aids campaign, and performed at the former South African president's 90th birthday concert.
Clegg said Mandela has been an inspiration to him for many years.
"I'm like most people who came out of the 1980s and the 70s and the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa - Mandela was a very important central figure which acted as a unifying symbol," Clegg said.
Clegg said he prefers to express his political beliefs through his music.
"I think all art, real art, is revolutionary - all real art challenges and puts up an alternative view," he said.
"There's a very strong tradition in folk music and folk rock music of social and political comment.
"It makes you see something else is possible, and to that extent it can change somebody's ideas."
Now working on a new album that he describes as "a very weird mixture" of modern and traditional music, Clegg will take time out from recording for his second Australian tour in late May, visiting Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

Catch Johnny Clegg live in Australia and New Zealand in May/June 2009 for six spectacular shows. The SA superstar will be back for his first shows in the region in over three years, with a world-class band and some great support acts! Tickets can be bought from any of the participating ticket outlets on the left here, or from the theatre box offices at the listed venues.
Keep an eye on this site for the latest developments, interviews, pics and press releases.
The Brisbane tickets are on sale (I bought 10 in the front row today at AUD $110. The other price category is about AUD $85.) I haven't checked whether tickets for the other cities are actually on sale yet, although I suspect they are.
Thanks to Andy Innes for the headsup on this. As he says, we have to bear in mind that the dates are still provisional until the touring party's confirmed and the performance contracts are signed.
The JohnnyClegg.com site still says the tour is "postponed" and shows the dates from last November. Andy says they'll have a new site up by the end of the month "which will be better maintained and linked into the Scatterlings Club with merch and a new business method".
Australian tour has been postponed. Check here for new dates as they are announced.Check out the new www.scatterlingsclub.com - the official Johnny Clegg community site offering documentaries on Zulu guitar, war dancing and many other items that shaped Johnny Clegg's early life. The site also carries other exclusive products created for the club and its membership. (http://www.johnnyclegg.com/)

Sadly the tickets (for Brisbane at least) not being sold through Ticketmaster means that those of us who kept the tickets we bought for November (because Ticketmaster promised they'd be valid for the shows when they were reshceduled for March) will now have to go and get refunds. And the tickets are a fair bit more expensive than November's.
But on a positive note, the Concert Hall (which is the same venue as for the last tour) is currently closed for refurbishment so should be in good shape in May.
salani kahle, Nick, in sunny Brisbane, looking forward to a fabulous show.

Johnny Clegg, the white Zulu, is on his way back to Australia.
Clegg was born in London [correct is: "
born in Rochdale, Lancashire, England - 7 year old comes he to SA"] but grew up in South Africa. His songs, mixing Zulu with English lyrics, have made him a household name in South Africa.
His fame spread to Europe where he has had two platinum and five gold records. At one stage, he had the number one and number two song in France with 'Third World Child' and 'Shadow Man'.
Legend has it that Clegg is so big in France that once Michael Jackson cancelled a show that was on in the same city on the same night after Clegg sold more tickets.

Johnny Clegg will tour Australia from May 21.
Dates for Australia and New Zealand are:
May 21, Perth, The Riverside Theatre
May 25, Melbourne, Palais Theatre
May 26, Sydney, State Theatre

South African superstar Johnny Clegg is heading back to Australia and New Zealand for the first time in three years in May.
He is known as The White Zulu and as we prepare for his impending tour, Undercover brings you the classic clip 'Scatterlings of Africa'.
This was the song that broke Johnny Clegg worldwide. It was a hit from Australia to Europe with his then band Juluka in 1987 from the Third World Child album, although it had been released in 1982.
Clegg sings in both English and Zulu.

Johnny Clegg Once Outsold Madonna and Michael Jackson
by Paul Cashmere - April 27 2009
http://undercover.com.au/News-Story.aspx?id=8177
South African superstar Johnny Clegg once did the unthinkable. In 1988, he outsold both Michael Jackson and Madonna combined in France.
"In 1998 we did an incredible feat. We outsold Michael Jackson and Madonna together," he tells Undercover News. "I sold 1.3 million albums in 18 months of the first album which was unheard of".
In fact, Clegg was so big in France that the French Government knighted him. In 1991, he was awarded the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres (Knight of Arts and Letters).
Clegg has also received a doctorate in South Africa. "I am a doctor of music and can't read a note. How does that come about?, he laughs"
The award was bona-fide though. "It is an award based on the fact that I have been part of creating a whole new musical genre in world music," he says. "I was part of the early styles in mixing language and music and melody and rhythm and creating a new style of South African music".

Johnny Clegg Is No Stranger To The Big Screen
by Paul Cashmere - April 29 2009

If you saw `George of the Jungle`, `Rain Man` or a dozen other movies you may have heard the music of Johnny Clegg. His songs have been in a few.
'George of the Jungle' was a good place for his biggest hit 'Scatterlings of Africa'. "It was quiet nice," he tells Undercover News.
Clegg has become somewhat of a regular on the big screen. "I have had a number of songs," he says. "'Cruel Crazy Beautiful World', 'Scatterlings Of Africa', 'Great Heart'. They have all been in movies. 'Scatterlings' was in Rain Man, 'Cruel Crazy Beautiful World' appeared in about four B-grade movies at one stage".
Watching a movie and hearing the songs is equally strange for the South African superstar. "It is bizarre, it is very bizarre," he says. "I have had that experience. They always place the songs in the weirdest place".
Expect to hear the best of Johnny Clegg when he brings his show to Australia an

South Africans with friends and relatives in Australia and New Zealand can give them the ultimate gift – tickets to concerts by Johnny Clegg.
Clegg is one of SA's most famous sons, and his music, rooted in the African soil, resonates strongly with locals, expatriates and new converts alike. Four years after he last toured Australia, he is returning for a series of performances in May and June.
Clegg and his band will be performing at the PCEC Riverside Theatre in Perth on 21 May; at the Palais Theatre in Melbourne on 25 May; at the Sydney State Theatre on 26 May; at the QPAC in Brisbane on 28 May; at the St James Opera Hall in Wellington on 30 May; and in the Auckland Town Hall on 1 June.
Collectively, these venues can seat more than 10,000 people and it is hoped that crowds will turn out in their numbers to see "the White Zulu" at full throttle.
Clegg enjoyed great success during his previous tour of the Antipodes in 2005. This time around, he will be supported by an as yet unnamed opening act during his performances, and audiences can expect a full 90 minutes of this iconic singer-songwriter and his knockout live band.
High-energy Zulu dance routines and classic Clegg, Juluka and Savuka hits such as Impi, Scatterlings of Africa and Asimbonanga will be interspersed with newer material, resulting in a show that's distinctly South African and immensely entertaining.
During a career spanning more than 30 years, Clegg has had an indelible impact on not only South African music, but world music in general, through his efforts to foster an awareness and appreciation of indigenous sounds on the global stage. He defied the segregation laws of the time to forge a hybrid of Western pop and Zulu musical structures that, to this day, strikes a chord with audiences of all hues.
Having penned several hits and received numerous awards – including being named a Knight of Arts and Letters by the Government of France – Clegg continues to make music and tour extensively, playing to rapturous crowds locally and abroad.
South Africans who are living in South Africa will be pleased to hear that exchange control rules enable them to purchase tickets on the internet as a gift for their loved ones and friends, for Clegg's performances in Australia and New Zealand, using their South African credit card.
