Beschreibung

"Der weiße Zulu" ist eine ebenso weltweit bekannte Persönlichkeit wie Nelson Mandela, für den er seinen legendären Hit "Asimbonanga" komponierte. 2008, zu seinem 90. Geburtstag, stieg der Präsident der Gewaltlosigkeit bei einer Tournee zur Aids-Bekämpfung sogar zu den Klängen von "Asimbonanga" auf die Bühne.

Der Musiker, Komponist, Tänzer und Anthropologe Johnny Clegg ist der Sänger des Anti-Apartheid-Kampfes. Er trug dazu bei, die südafrikanische Musik und das Engagement für die Bürgerrechte der Schwarzen in der ganzen Welt bekannt zu machen.
Cleggs die vielgestaltigen Kulturen seines Landes verbindende Musik unterlag der Zensur des Apartheidsregimes. Dennoch überquerte sie die Grenzen, erregte internationales Aufsehen und machte den Künstler zur Ikone der 1990er-Jahre. In den vergangenen dreißig Jahren verkaufte er mehr als 50 Millionen Alben.

Johnny Clegg setzt seinen Kampf für die Menschen- und Kinderrechte fort und stellt auf dem Festival Rio Loco sein neues, im Mai 2010 ("??") erschienenes Album, "The Road is Longer", vor.

Südafrika steht durch die Fussball-WM 2010 im Fokus der Weltöffentlichkeit. Musikalisch hatte das Land am Kap aber bereits in der Vergangenheit durchaus einiges zu bieten: Stars wie Miriam Makeba, der Trompeter Hugh Masekela oder die viel zu früh gestorbene Sängerin Brenda Fassie – oder auch Manfred Mann, Howard Carpendale und natürlich Johnny Clegg, „The White Zulu“, wie er ebenfalls genannt wird!

Der 1953 im englischen Manchester geborene Sänger, Gitarrist und Songschreiber ging den Weg in die andere Richtung, über Rhodesien (Simbabwe) nach Südafrika, das seit 1960 seine Heimat ist. Trotz Apartheid kam er früh mit schwarzafrikanischer Kultur in Berührung (studierte später auch Ethnologie, war zeitweilig gar als Dozent aktiv) und erlernte bei den Zulus deren Musik und Tänze. Ende der 1960er Jahre traf er auf Sipho Mchunu, mit dem er fortan als Duo Johnny & Sipho auftrat und sogar erste Zulu-meets-Western-Folk-Platten veröffentlichte. Die gemeinsamen Konzerte konnten aufgrund der scharfen Rassentrennung nur im Verborgenen stattfinden.

1979 formierten Johnny Clegg und Sipho Mchunu die Band JULUKA (Zulu für „Schweiß“), die erste Pop/Rock-Formation Südafrikas mit Musikern verschiedener Hautfarben. Bis Mitte der 1980er veröffentlichte die Band diverse LPs und Singles, die langsam auch international Aufmerksamkeit erregten. Nach der Juluka-Trennung gründete Johnny Clegg seine zweite, noch erfolgreichere Band SAVUKA (Zulu für „wir sind erwacht“). Auch diese Band bestand aus farbigen und weißen Musikern. Die Debüt-LP „Third World Child“ von 1987 erreichte in Frankreich Platz 1 der Charts, in Deutschland kam das 3. Album „Cruel, Crazy, Beautiful World“ immerhin in die Top 50. Vor allem live war die Band ein absolutes Ereignis, wovon sich das globale Dorf 1990 bei einer neunmonatigen „World Tour“ überzeugen konnte. Dennoch war vier Jahre später auch das Kapitel Savuka beendet.

Die von EMI France (jetzt aus gegebenem WM-Anlass) initiierte und hierzulande parallel erscheinende Doppel-CD-Compilation „Spirit Is The Journey – The Best Of“ dokumentiert diese „30 Years Of Johnny Clegg“. Die erste CD besteht fast komplett aus Juluka-Songs, zum Beispiel der Originalfassung von „Scatterlings Of Africa“, ein Repertoire, das auf dem CD-Markt seit langer Zeit nicht mehr verfügbar war. CD 2 enthält Stücke aus den insgesamt vier Savuka-Alben. Die tiefe Einblicke gebenden Liner Notes zu den kritischen Songs über Politik und Gesellschaft, die Welt, die Natur und den Menschen wurden von JOHNNY CLEGG geschrieben. Er wird übrigens Ende Juni zwei große Open Air-Shows in Johannesburg spielen!

Eine der Möglichkeiten, dass WM-Land-Südafrika zu entdecken, ist seine Musik. Und neben den vielen originären schwarzen Musikern ist da mit Johnny Clegg einer, der die Verbindung von traditioneller Musik mit populärer Musik kongenial repräsentiert. Seit mittlerweile 30 Jahre ist der in England geborene, aber in Südafrika erwachsene und beheimatete Clegg eine Institution der Crossover-Musik, die das Rhythmus-Mekka Südafrika mit der Pop-Insel Großbritannien verbindet. Eine gerade erschienene Compilation mit dem Titel “Spirit Is The Journey” würdigt den sogenannten “White Zulu,” der bereits während der Apartheid das musikalische Erbe der schwarzen Bevölkerung hochhielt.

Jetzt, da das Land während der Fußball-WM in der Öffentlichkeit steht, ist Johnny Clegg eine willkommene Entdeckung mit seinen leichten, lebendigen, positiven Crossover-Afro-Klängen, die hervorragend zwischen Großbildleinwand, Grillfeier und Gröhl-Gemeinschaft passen. Einach mal reinhören und anstecken lassen von der südafrikanischen Lebensfreude, die trotz aller Widrigkeiten der noch immer nicht optimalen Lebensumstände am Kap unüberhörbar ist.

A Country Imagined takes us on a journey through South Africa and explores the landscapes that have inspired artists, writers, musicians and dancers for centuries.

Presented by one of South Africa’s most loved and famous musicians – Johnny Clegg – who is also an anthropologist – A Country Imagined takes us through South Africa’s most beautiful spaces – and through this, we explore the rich history of art and the “imaginings” of our society.

The programmes introduce us to South African artists and their work as well as the landscapes they work with. Some, like Nadine Gordimer, Olive Schreiner, Hugh Masekela, Gerard Sekoto, William Kentridge and David Goldblatt are known around the world. Others, will soon be. Some – like the bead workers and potters of remote rural villages have produced works without signatures. A Country Imagined takes viewers on an unusual and rewarding journey through South Africa as it explores the landscapes that have inspired artists; writers; musicians; and dancers for centuries.

Presented by one of South Africa’s most loved and famous musicians and dancers – Johnny Clegg – who is also an anthropologist, A Country Imagined takes us through South Africa’s most beautiful and culturally layered spaces – and through this, the rich histories of art in the country and the 'imaginings' of our society are explored.

Johnny Clegg, who celebrates his 30^th year in the music industry this year combines a unique ability to learn; teach; and perform simultaneously. In the series he performs with musicians and dancers in remote villages around the country; talks to artists; both famous and unknown; hikes the Drakensberg to find the best rock art and views; travels in hot air balloons; helicopters and boats. To this he brings his insight; expertise; and a great deal of humour, offering viewers a rich and accessible perspective on South African art.

Produced by Curious Pictures, (Tobias’ Bodies; The Lab; Hard Copy; Tsha Tsha; and Hopeville), the series has taken two years to make. It has involved traversing 80 000 kilometres, often over difficult terrain, scouring regional art galleries and private collections for artwork of lesser-known artists and literally hundreds of hours of research. It is produced by Lusanda Chauke and art historian, Tracy Murinik and directed by some of South Africa’s most acclaimed directors, including Guy Spiller; John Trengove; Vincent Moloi; Feizel Mamdoo; Liza Key; and Terri Ella.

Shot on HD, with remarkable aerial, historical and time-lapse photography, A Country Imagined is a 13 one-hour series, set to be aired on Sundays at 21:00, starting 25 April.
