Die Auslosung der Vorrunden-Gruppen für die WM-Endrunde 2010 in Südafrika am 4. Dezember in Kapstadt (18.00 Uhr MEZ) wird weltweit in 200 Länder übertragen und sorgt damit für eine Höchstmarke, wie der Internationale Fußball-Verband FIFA am Mittwoch mitteilte. Bei der Endrundenauslosung für die WM 2006 in Deutschland in Leipzig waren im Dezember 2005 lediglich 137 Länder zugeschaltet, insgesamt verfolgten damals 134,5 Millionen Zuschauer vor den Fernsehgeräten das Prozedere.
»Die Endrundenauslosung wird die Zuschauer weltweit in ihren Bann ziehen. Wir freuen uns, die 32 qualifizierten Länder endlich in Afrika zu begrüßen und sie am Rhythmus und der Energie unseres Kontinents teilhaben zu lassen. Wir sind überzeugt, dass diese Veranstaltung der perfekte Auftakt zur ersten Weltmeisterschaft in Afrika bilden wird«, sagte Südafrikas OK-Chef Danny Jordaan.
Bei der Auslosungszeremonie werden im Showteil der mit dem Grammy ausgezeichnete Soweto Gospel Choir, die Sängerin und Songwriterin Angelique Kidjo aus Benin sowie Johnny Clegg, einer der bekanntesten Musikexporte Südafrikas, auftreten.

The Final Draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa will take place in Cape Town on 4 December 2009 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC).The entertainment lined up for the 90-minute live show will include the Soweto Gospel Choir, Beninoise singer-songwriter Angélique Kidjo and Johnny Clegg.
Among these popular stars will be sports personalities who will arrive in South Africa to attend the Final Draw to see whom and where the 32 qualified teams will be playing.
The event will be broadcast about 200 countries worldwide. “We are very proud to be a part of the Final Draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa. It is an incredible opportunity,” said Beverly Bryer, founder and manager of the Soweto Gospel cCoir. The choir will perform alongside Johnny Clegg, a well-known campaigner against the injustice of apartheid in South Africa who has been instrumental in putting the new South Africa on the map.
“The FIFA World Cup Final Draw has developed into a major live show that is followed with great excitement by millions of people across the world. It will re-ignite the 2010 FIFA World Cup fever not just in the host country but also in the qualified countries, where excitement is mounting as we draw nearer to next year's FIFA flagship event,” said FIFA secretary general Jérôme Valcke, who will conduct the draw.
The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has been appointed by FIFA for the production of the Final Draw show, while HBS (Host Broadcasting Services) will deliver broadcast signals worldwide in its capacity as overall host broadcaster. After producing the Preliminary Draw in November 2007 in Durban and the draw for the FIFA Confederations Cup in November 2008 in Johannesburg, the SABC has again commissioned Combined Artists to produce the Final Draw.
“This Final Draw has all the ingredients to capture the imagination of the watching world. We look forward to finally welcoming the 32 qualifying countries to Africa to share in the rhythm and energy of our continent, and are certain that this event will provide the perfect prelude to Africa's first FIFA World Cup,” said Danny Jordaan, CEO of the FIFA World Cup Organising Committee.

The Soweto Gospel Choir, singer-songwriter Angélique Kidjo and Johnny Clegg will provide a star-studded line-up for the 2010 FIFA World Cup final draw in Cape Town on 4 December.
Sowetan reports that the 90-minute live show starting at 7pm will be held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
There will also be guest appearances by some of the biggest names in sport as they descend on South Africa for the eagerly anticipated Final Draw to decide whom and where the 32 qualified teams will be playing.

Next album release 2010

Currently working on his latest album, due for release in February, Clegg is travelling between studios in SA and Brussels.

"This is the first time that I'm not doing everything on the album myself and there's been a lot of pressure. I'm used to being able to take my time and do things at my own pace, but with this album I've had to fit into everyone else's schedule. Even though my last album, One Life, wasn't a huge commercial success, I really enjoyed working on it because it came together slowly.

"I could sit and mull over the songs until they felt right to me and there was no pressure or deadlines.

"I'm excited about the new album, though. It's very close to my early stuff, but with an organic sound. And we've used an entire live band in studio, which is a first for me."

J.C. working on a 13-part TV series for SABC "A Country Imagined"

...he is also working on a 13-part TV series for SABC, due for release next year. Titled A Country Imagined, the series, which Clegg is presenting, looks at how landscapes shape communities and cultures and how reactions to landscapes affect expression, thereby shaping music and dance. Four episodes have already been filmed....

In 2007, The Heritage Art Festival launched The Heritage Awards in an endeavour to honour and preserve our nation’s diverse cultural heritage. Six individuals are chosen and awarded for their contribution to the preservation and promotion of South African heritage during an awards ceremony each year as part of the festival. These awards are intended to acknowledge the recipients’ artistic excellence and support their continuing contribution to our nation’s traditional cultural heritage.

A committee made up of senior representatives of The Office of The Premier, The National Arts Council, Business Arts South Africa, The Independent Newspapers and Kizo Art Consultants select the awardees.

WHEN Johnny Clegg came to perform in the country at the Bush Fire Festival, there were again mild protests from the local media about restrictions concerning taking photographs.
Before Johnny Clegg went on stage the MC announced that photojournalists and individuals were not allowed to take pictures.
It has transpired though that this was not a case of the promoters being hell-bent to frustrate the work of photojournalists.
It was said that this was an international trend for most live performances, which had everything to do with image control, a clampdown on piracy and to minimise disturbances during the performances.
House on Fire Director Jigg's Thorne, explained during Johnnny Clegg's last performance that such restrictions were found all over the world in such shows.
"It's for security as much as preventing piracy and also protecting the image of the artist. This also speaks to issues of freedom and to allow the artist to give out the best, express themselves without hindrance and kick up a storm on stage without fearing an unflattering picture on the front pages the next day". On the issue of piracy, Thorne said though it was hard to completely eradicate piracy of music and films, such restriction were also based on efforts to control it.

SOUTH AFRICA - JOHNNY CLEGG

The Rochdale-born musician has a career spanning more than 30 years and his political activism combined with his commercial success has made him a very significant figure in African music.

He says his band of black and white musicians, Juluka, broke the law by performing during the apartheid era, and annoyed the authorities with its mixture of Zulu and English influences.

The man nicknamed the "White Zulu" wrote election anthems for the ANC and performed at Nelson Mandela's inauguration in 1994.

He has enjoyed international success, with a Grammy nomination for his band Savuka, and a million-selling album in France.

Hold the phone! That’s not true. Or is it? I read today the Brits are trying to claim Johnny Clegg from us. The BBC had an article titled: “Ten famous Britons you’ve probably never heard of”. And there he was, number ten on the list.

Ok, granted, he was born in the UK. But does that make him British? Not in my book. He’s a true blue South African. The real deal. Mr Clegg has a very unique South African story. Musician, anthropologist and Zulu dancer. In 2004, South Africa voted him number 23 on SABC’s Great South Africans. They also voted in Verwoerd at number 19 but let’s not go there. Johnny Clegg is South African. Finish and klaar.........
